Una solución posible y barata es prevenirse desinfectando los CDs y matando el hongo y sus esporas. Para esto, utilizaremos alcohol medicinal (alcohol etílico), que tiene propiedades desinfectantes y es inocuo para la composición de los CDs. Este alcohol lo conseguimos en cualquier farmacia, y es muy barato. El procedimiento sería así: humedecemos una bola compacta de algodón con alcohol y escurrimos para quitar el alcohol sobrante. Luego, limpiamos la cara plateada del CD con movimientos suaves desde el centro hacia el borde (no en círculos). A continuación, secamos el alcohol con un pañuelo de papel que sea muy suave, con los mismos movimientos, desde el centro hacia el borde, ¡NUNCA en círculos! Ésta es una medida de prevención; porque obviamente, cuando el hongo ya ha comido partes del CD, no es posible repararlo.
Algunos sugieren el uso de alcohol isopropílico, que sería más apropiado debido a que no absorbe humedad, como sí lo hace el alcohol etílico (que contiene un porcentaje mínimo de agua). Pero el inconveniente que tiene es que ese alcohol no tiene propiedades altamente desinfectantes.
Si realmente nos preocupa tanto la humedad (no debería, si secamos el CD), podemos usar alcohol absoluto (se llama alcohol absoluto al alcohol exento totalmente de agua, alcohol anhidro).
También conviene limpiar la caja del CD y la bandeja de las lectoras; si bien el láser no hace contacto físico con el CD, el contagio del hongo se produce igual gracias a las esporas.
¿Por qué alcohol? Simplemente porque es un poderoso antiséptico; las células introducidas en alcohol mueren al poco tiempo.
